Author Biography

John Smart
John Smart is a Professor in the Archives Technician Program at Algonquin College in Ottawa. An archivist at the National Archives of Canada since 1974, John was Head of the State Records Unit in the Government Archives Division prior to his Algonquin appointment. He has served as President of the Ontario Association of Archivists, as Chair of the OAA Education Committee, and has twice served as Director of the National Archives residential course on Archival Principles and Administration. During 199 1 - 1992 he was ACA representative on the Bureau of Canadian Archivists' Task Force on a National Education Strategy. He is currently a Corresponding Member of the ACA Education Committee. In 1989 he was first recipient of the Alexander Fraser Award of the Ontario Association of Archivists and in November 1991 he was admitted into membership in the American Academy of Certified Archivists. Since February of 1993 he has been a member of the Honours and Awards jury of the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship, Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Recreation.
